DBS and Citi complete weekend dollar transfer on Swift ledger

The Sept. 5 Singapore–New York payment is the ledger's second live use, stretching tokenized deposits past standard banking hours while final settlement stays on existing systems.

DBS said it completed a U.S. dollar payment between Singapore and Citi's New York office on Sept. 5 using tokenized deposits on Swift's blockchain-based Digital Ledger, a transfer that took minutes and pushed the ledger's live use beyond standard banking hours.

According to The Defiant, that payment was the ledger's second confirmed live use; HSBC and Standard Chartered completed the first cross-border transfer on the ledger in August, as this publication reported, and the September payment's distinguishing feature was weekend execution on the Singapore–US corridor. Swift announced on July 9 that the ledger was ready for initial use, with seventeen banks across six continents preparing live pilots built on tokenized deposits and a first use case of 24/7 cross-border payments; DBS is the only Asian-headquartered bank in the ledger's 12-bank core design group.

Swift describes the ledger as a secure orchestration layer for bank-issued tokenized deposits held on participating banks' own ledgers; the blockchain coordinates movement, final settlement still runs through existing banking systems, and banks can move customer funds overnight and on weekends before completing final settlement through those same systems. DBS and Citi demonstrated the tokenized-deposit process works over a weekend; they did not move final settlement onto Swift's blockchain.

For a corporate treasurer, the practical difference is the ability to shift liquidity across time zones without losing days to the weekend gap, which DBS framed against an industry norm of up to two business days for cross-border payments. The ledger moves the funds now and completes settlement later, compressing the part of the payment that used to sit still.

The word orchestration is doing real work here: banks keep their own ledgers as the books of record, and the blockchain coordinates the queue without replacing finality. Future pilots will have to cross that line if tokenized deposits are to become a genuine 24/7 settlement layer, and the announcement disclosed neither the payment's value nor a timetable for broader client availability.
