FCA opens crypto authorization gateway with February 2027 deadline

Firms have five months to apply for permission to operate in the UK, well before the regime takes effect in October 2027.

The Financial Conduct Authority opened its crypto authorization gateway on Wednesday, setting a five-month application window that forces firms to commit before the October 2027 start date, when the rules themselves take effect. Applications close at the end of February 2027.

The window ends a legislative arc running back to 2022, during which the UK looked slow next to the European Union: MiCA, the EU's crypto rulebook, came into force in June 2023, around the time the relevant UK Act was becoming law. Late last year the FCA confirmed that start date, along with the application-window mechanism that opened this week.

For the 60-plus firms already on the FCA's register, the head start is real but not total. Registrations sit under a regime focused primarily on anti-money-laundering controls, and much of the heavy lifting behind those registrations may already be done; but the framework now being built reaches wider than AML supervision, so the distance from application to permission shortens without disappearing.

Zumo, an Edinburgh-based crypto infrastructure platform that won registration in 2021, has built a UK Cryptoasset Regulation Tracker that spells out what the incoming rules require and maps the milestones. Founder and CEO Nick Jones said in an emailed announcement that building it meant reading the regime down to each individual obligation and tying every one to the regulated activity it attaches to, and that Zumo is developing its tracker as an industry operator rather than as a law firm or consultancy.

The February date obliges firms to commit while the framework itself is still more than a year away, making the filing, not the commencement, the point where the regime first bites. Europe is moving on a comparable clock: PWD has covered EU securities supervisors checking how firms use tokenized products and AI from 2027, and the EBA's plan to put stablecoin lending under examiner control. What the FCA coverage leaves open is how long the regulator expects to take on applications, the figure a firm weighing the cost of building to the UK regime will want before it decides how early to file.
