HSBC names its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin RedCoin for 2026 rollout

HSBC has named the Hong Kong dollar stablecoin it intends to issue RedCoin, The Defiant reports, with issuance planned for the second half of 2026 and initial distribution limited to PayMe and the HSBC HK Mobile App.
The report does not name the blockchain RedCoin would run on, the reserves behind it, the redemption terms, or the expected size of the float, nor whether holders outside the bank’s customer base could obtain the token. For a payment instrument, those are the operating terms; a brand name substitutes for none of them.
The Defiant’s headline frames the launch as a consumer rollout, and the two front ends are the only distribution channels the report names, which suggests the first holders will be app users rather than exchange customers or third-party wallets. Early adoption becomes measurable in app engagement rather than trading volume. The token’s usefulness will be tested against the ordinary payments and transfers those apps already handle.
The report is dated Sept. 30, 2026, and describes a plan for the second half of that same year, leaving the final quarter as the window the bank has set itself. It says nothing about approvals—the probable gating item for a licensed bank putting a deposit-like liability into circulation—or about which chains and custodians would be involved.
