JPMorgan adds euro payments to JPM Coin

Siemens is the first client to move euros on the bank's tokenized rail, which still settles only inside JPMorgan.

At a glance

15-second brief

  • Siemens is a fitting first user.

JPMorgan has turned on euro payments for JPM Coin, the first non-dollar use of its tokenized rail. The Onyx-built service now moves euros between JPMorgan branches and to clients that bank at JPMorgan. Siemens was the first client to use the euro coins, according to Ledger Insights, and the bank had flagged the expansion last year. Before this, JPM Coin ran only in dollars.

Siemens is a fitting first user. Its treasury issued a digital bond on a public blockchain earlier this year, so tokenized instruments are familiar ground there. The euro coin gives a multinational corporate treasurer a real use case: instant movement of euros inside one banking relationship.

The euro service inherits a hard constraint. JPM Coin's reach stops at JPMorgan's own walls; it cannot pay a recipient who banks elsewhere. That makes the service a set of tokenized internal accounts, which is exactly how the bank frames it: blockchain-based bank accounts.

The intra-bank ceiling

The ceiling is the design, and the design is the point. By keeping settlement inside the bank, JPMorgan avoids the questions that slow open networks — who validates, who governs, which law applies. What it gives up is the interbank leg, the part of a payment that leaves one institution and enters another. That leg stays outside the token.

The rollout shows where the early demand sits: treasury desks that already keep balances at the bank. Tokenization in payments, for now, is advancing inside a single balance sheet rather than across the industry.
