XRP Ledger's atomic-settlement upgrade slips to Oct. 9

Batch's ten-day reset shows the rail's feature dates move at validator speed, and tokenized-asset products waiting on all-or-nothing settlement inherit that schedule risk.

The XRP Ledger's Batch upgrade will not activate on Sept. 29: BatchV1_1, the corrected version of the amendment, regained support from 30 of 35 trusted validators on Sept. 25, starting the fresh two-week countdown that puts its earliest activation at Oct. 9 around 14:46 UTC. Votes had been accumulating since Sept. 15, but a brief drop below the more-than-80% support XRPL amendments must hold for two consecutive weeks erased the elapsed time — and the returning votes do not hand it back.

The piece that slipped is the part of the ledger aimed at tokenized assets: Batch would let a user submit up to eight transactions as a bundle, and its all-or-nothing option could let a buyer pay for a tokenized asset and receive it in the same operation, so neither side of the trade completes alone. That is delivery-versus-payment without a trusted intermediary holding both legs, the settlement primitive a tokenized fund, treasury or equity product wants in place before an issuer puts a size on the book.

RippleX's head of engineering, Ayo Akinyele, previously told CoinDesk that projects were being built around Batch and that Ripple would share more about work with asset managers once the feature went live. "Some projects are already being built with Batch in mind, so activation would allow that work to move closer to production," he said, without naming the partners or giving launch dates, which leaves the size of the waiting queue unquantified on both sides of the trade.

This is Batch's second run at activation: developers withdrew the original version over a critical signature-checking flaw before it could turn on, and the corrected implementation shipped in August with version 3.3.0 of the software that runs the ledger. The reset rule that cost ten days this week is the other face of that caution — amendments move at the speed of validator votes rather than release notes, an awkward property for a network courting institutions that publish product dates.

Batch is not the only amendment on the clock: PermissionDelegationV1_1, which would let a business authorize another account to perform approved actions without sharing the signing keys that control its funds, lost qualifying support on Sept. 23 and regained it a day later, moving its earliest activation from Oct. 5 to Oct. 8 around 21:25 UTC. The issuer use case is separation of duties — handing payment and compliance to different operational accounts — and both delayed features serve the same buyer: the one that wants settlement and delegated authority on one ledger before it moves real balances.

Tokenization's binding constraint remains the wrapper and the register, and nothing here weakens that: the register still decides who owns the asset, and tokenization's standards increasingly carry expiry dates. The slip, then, establishes that the rail is not neutral background plumbing. An issuer that builds atomic delivery into a launch calendar is contracting against a governance vote it does not control, and the penalty arrives in two-week units. Watch Oct. 9 at 14:46 UTC; support that dips again resets the clock, and the date moves with it.
